This blog will explain the choice to change the students design and introduce the new concept, with the reasons for the alterations and comparison between the two.

After face casting and planning the start of sculpting the student re considered their design for a larger piece. Keeping the same idea but adapting the design, the student developed a new concept for the face chart and outfit design.

After consulting with their tutor, the student agreed that the design was under-skilled for the them and agreed to push themselves for a larger piece of work. Looking at the face cast the tutor tasked the student to re design the facial piece and gather more ideas.

Starting with a sketch the student came up with the following two new ideas:

Figure 1

The first design consisting of a tree knot over one eye and the second a large forehead piece. As the student wanted to go down the high fashion route and still have a glamour makeup the tutor agreed with using the second sketch for the new design.

The students finished face chart with labels:

The student also re designed the costume for the character as the old design did not fit the new aesthetic. After changing their concept, the student finally felt excited and enjoyed what they were making, the old design made the student feel lost and not 100% confident on their work. After the change the student felt inspired and motivated to start making the costume.

The new costume design and added flat mould piece:

Comparison to previous design:

When comparing the new design to the old one it is evident that the student has completely changed their prosthetic piece from one side of the face and in 2 patches to a full forehead piece. The makeup colour scheme has remained the same although both eyebrows will be covered.

The costume for their character has completely change with opting for a darker colour palette to match the makeup better as well as the headdress taking a different shape. The student changed the dress from shorter to a longer design to cover the legs and a more flattering and accurate ram horn shape in the headdress. The new costume design creates a lot of interest and dimension with the headdress joining onto the headdress.
